In 2006 The Army Surgeon General established the Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Task Force for the Department of the Army to establish a clear picture of the processes and research involved with the prevention, identification, assessment, treatment, rehabilitation, Family support, and transition to civilian life of Service Members with TBI.

The TBI Task Force was chartered in January 2007. The purpose of the TBI Task Force was to assess how the Army addresses aspects of TBI care and made recommendations to The Army Surgeon General for improvement.

The mission of the TBI Task Force was to identify:

  • Existing policies, procedures, and resources
  • Possible gaps through which Soldiers and Family Members may slip
  • Which gaps can be closed by MEDCOM vice DoD or interagency action, policy or resources
  • Best Practices in the treatment and management of TBI.
  • Research efforts in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and management of TBI
  • Required resources to care for service members with TBI

The TBI Task Force Report to The Surgeon General included forty-eight recommendations in the categories of:

  • Definition Research
  • Outreach Program Family Issues
  • Baseline Neuropsychological Evaluation Education
  • Screening Marketing
  • TBI Center of Excellence Documentation
  • Treatment PDES
  • Case Management Resource Management
