PTs in Brigade Combat Teams

PR&R Home

The placement of Physical Therapists (PTs) in the Brigade Combat Team (BCT) was instituted to enhance unit combat readiness through early diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal injuries, injury prevention, and human performance optimization. The decision to allocate Physical Therapy (PT) resources to the BCT unit level was conceived following the demonstrated success of PT’s impact on unit readiness in each of the Army’s Ranger Battalions and Special Forces Groups over the last decade.

  • Physical Therapists will provide a unique Sports Medicine skill set in the BCT which will increase unit readiness through:
    • Early diagnosis and treatment of injuries to promote timely return to duty (Rehab)
    • Injury Prevention (IP)
    • Human Performance Optimization (HPO)
  • Army doctrine (AR 40-68) endorses Physical Therapists as being the best qualified to serve as Brigade Command consultants to optimize physical performance and minimize injuries in the BCT
  • The Physical Therapist actively seeks a collaborative team approach with all stakeholders to ensure successful mission accomplishment
