Deputy Chief of Staff for Readiness/Assistant Surgeon General
for Mobilization, Readiness, and National Guard Affairs

BG David E. Wilmot assumed duties as the U.S. Army’s Assistant Surgeon General for Mobilization, Readiness and National Guard Affairs and U.S. Army MEDCOM Deputy Chief of Staff for Readiness on 1 November, 2010.  As Deputy Chief of Staff for Readiness, BG Wilmot advises the Chief of Staff on medical readiness issues across the Regional Medical Commands and across all Components.  As Assistant Surgeon General, he assists the Deputy Surgeon General for the Army National Guard in providing consultative services and strategic planning in all aspects of medical readiness, health care, medical personnel, medical operational and training issues that comprise the critical medical readiness indicators pertaining to the Army National Guard.  Prior to this position, BG Wilmot was dual-hatted as the Indiana Army National Guard State Surgeon and Commander of the Indiana Medical Detachment since January 2003.

BG Wilmot is a graduate of Indiana Wesleyan University where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Chemistry in 1984.  He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1989.  He then completed his residency in Family Practice at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1992 and was awarded the Degree of Fellow by the American Academy of Family Physicians in 2002.  He is currently certified by the American Board of Family Physicians.  His military education includes completion of the AMEDD Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, Command and General Staff College, Army Flight Surgeon Course, Homeland Security for Health Care Executives, and the U.S. Army War College.

BG Wilmot was directly commissioned in the Medical Service Corps during medical school in 1985 and appointed to the Medical Corps in 1989 serving in the Indiana Army National Guard.  His assignments include Commander, 398th Medical Detachment 1991-1992; Commander, 390th Medical Detachment 1992-1994; Assistant State Surgeon, Indiana 1994-2000; and Division Surgeon 38th Infantry Division 2000-2002.

His deployment experience includes Brigade Surgeon, SFOR-15 in Bosnia in 2004 and TMC Physician with the 738th Area Support Medical Company in Camp Victory, Iraq in 2006.  He also deployed as the TF MED Commander with the 38th ID in Mississippi following Hurricane Katrina in 2005.  Additionally, he served as the Deputy Joint Surgeon at National Guard Bureau from July 2008 through August 2009. His military decorations and awards include the Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, U.S. Public Health Service Unit Commendation, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal with one silver and two bronze oak leaf clusters, National Defense Service Medal with bronze service star, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with Silver Hour Glass, "M" device and #2, Army Service Ribbon, Army Reserve Components Overseas Training Ribbon with #3, NATO Non-Article Five Medal, Mississippi Magnolia Medal, Indiana Commendation Medal with bronze oak leaf cluster, Indiana Recruiting Ribbon, Indiana Long Service Medal with 20 Year circle device, Indiana Deployment Ribbon with one bronze oak leaf cluster, Indiana Overseas Service Ribbon with four bronze oak leaf clusters, Mississippi Emergency Service Ribbon, Meritorious Unit Citation, Indiana Military Volunteer Emblem, and Flight Surgeon Badge.  He is a member of the Order of Military Medical Merit.
